Having Trouble Finding a Good Luthier?
The purpose behind this directory is to provide guitarists (and bassists) all over the world with everything they need to find the right luthier. Whether you need someone to build a custom guitar, or somewhere local to get your setups done, this directory aims to provide. Luthiers are encouraged to add their info if they’re not listed here yet.
Keep in mind that while this list is quite extensive, and always growing, not all luthiers are created equal. The businesses are listed along with info that addresses people’s primary interests: custom guitar builders, unique / specialized / high quality guitar makers, online ordering, etc.
Something else to consider is that the quality of each luthier’s work is going to vary. Anyone who’s been playing guitar for a while and taken their instrument to a shop (or had a friend who says he knows how to get your action perfect) is going to have some bad experiences that led them to find someone they trust. I’ve been through it before I began my formal training in lutherie – I was immensely dissatisfied with a luthier in New York who happened to be a big name in the business (who will remain nameless, I can’t criticize someone for trying). I brought my guitar back to him 3 more times to try to get the action set correctly, and each time I got it back it seemed like he hadn’t done anything at all.
There was no custom guitar builders / luthier’s directory of any sort at the time, so I searched around and eventually found someone who got the job done on the first try. But he was quite far out of the way, and I would have definitely benefitted from being able to find someone closer to me. This directory serves as a public service for every guitarist – find someone local that you can trust because having a good luthier building, maintaining, or repairing your instruments can seriously make your playing experience a hundred times better.
